Learn how to calculate GPA and CGPA for Pondicherry University Semester exams.  GPA and CGPA are not same both are different.  
This article guides you how to find Grade Points Average(GPA) and Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) for Pondicherry university students.  For other universities the calculation method may be different or it may be same as this method.

Difference between GPA and CGPA

GPA stands for  Grade Points Average.  CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Points Average.  GPA means calculation of grade for only one semester, it does not include all semester grades to calculate your grades.  But CGPA means calculation of grade for all the semesters or more than one semester.  By including all semesters and finding a single grade is the final grade you obtain in your marksheet.


How To Calculate GPA:

GPA means calculation of total grade for only one semester.
  1. First we need to find total sum of credit hours.
  2. Then we need to multiply the credit hours and the grade points for each subject.
  3. And we need to find the total sum of the multiplication of credit hours and grade points.
  4. Then we need to divide the answer we find in step 3 with the total sum of credit hours
This is for only one semester.  That is why it is called GPA.

How To Calculate CGPA:

CGPA means calculation of total grade for many semesters.  Then we have to include many semester subjects in this calculation.  If one semester contains 6 theory and 3 labs and another semester contain 6 theory and 3 labs then we have to do the calculation for 12 theory and 6 labs.  Then the obtained answer is CGPA.

To calculate your final CGPA for pondicherry university students, we need to calculate from 3rd semester onwards.  Because lateral entry students will not be present in the 1st year.  So we need to calculate our final CGPA from 3rd semester onwards.  This CGPA will be printed in our Provisional certificate and degree certificate.

For example in a marksheet we have six theory subjects and three lab subjects.  You can easily understand the concept of GPA in the below image.

If we have eight semesters then we want to do the calculation for all subjects in that eight semesters to find CGPA.  Now we are going to calculate CGPA for 2 semesters containing six theory and three labs on both semesters.  We can easily understand the concept of CGPA in the below image.

How to calculate percentage from the grades

You can calculate percentage for your final grades (GPA or CGPA) by subtracting the final answer by 0.5 and multiply the answer with 10.  This is the new method for calculating percentage for the grades in pondicherry university colleges.
